“Radici del Sud”: Southern Italian Wines at the Castle of Sannicandro

Even if a bit late, I couldn’t miss the appointment with Radici del Sud. In a period inevitably conditioned by the ongoing pandemic, opportunities to come into contact with 300 wines representing the indigenous grape varieties of Southern Italy in a single setting are quite rare. Wines from Sardinia, Abruzzo, Molise, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, and Sicily were all present on the tasting tables of the event.

Twelve journalists, divided into two panels, were ready to evaluate them, paying particular attention to their typicity and territorial identity.

Three days of tastings took place at the Castello Normanno di Sannicandro, in a context of strict safety measures. Personally, I had the chance to discover several grape varieties that— I must admit— I had never encountered before, as well as to find some very welcome confirmations.

What I would particularly like to highlight, however, is the pleasant atmosphere in which this event has been unfolding. The pleasure of tasting, exploring, sharing, and engaging in discussion. Equally enjoyable was the warm hospitality offered by Nicola Campanile, the organizer of the event.

Now all that remains is to wait for the announcement of the winners, scheduled for Sunday, February 28 at 5:00 PM on the social media channels of Radici del Sud—and above all for the next edition, planned from June 9 to 14, hoping this time for an event closer to the vibrant format we have been used to in past years.
