Cantine Fina, a Surprise on an October Weekend

I drop in unexpectedly in Marsala, on the little hill where Cantine Fina stands. I hadn’t planned this visit, and I didn’t have high expectations. But then I meet Federica, and in the blink of an eye I’m swept away by her openness, creativity, hospitality, and the countless ideas we immediately start exchanging.

I love stories, and here there is a beautiful one to tell. It’s the story of a piece of land that once had nothing on it—a place where Federica’s parents used to stop just to look out at the Egadi Islands, and where today they have built a true family winery.

I arrive at the wrong moment, but at my disposal there is a stunning terrace with a breathtaking view, a tray with an outstanding pane cunzato, and a glass of El Aziz “il magnifico,” a late harvest made from 100% Grillo. A glass to savor for its sweetness—never cloying—full of honey, spices, and above all a different kind of finish, one that briefly moves away from sweetness to lead you toward other aromas and, most importantly, another sip. It’s nice to wait like this…

And then everyone gathers on the terrace: me, my trusted pusher (also known as my father), Bruno, Federica, Marco, and Sergio. We all chat together, relaxed, as if we had known each other for years. Then again with Federica, Kiké, talking about her initiatives, the concerts organized for “Kebrillerà,” the wine tourism projects, and the activities dedicated to young people.

I should probably also talk about the wine—the twenty years Federica’s father spent working with Giacomo Tachis, the new productions… but it’s time to head back, and there will be another opportunity to taste Fina in the glass.
