A story that begins a long time ago. Feudo Disisa is a gift from King William to the Archbishop of Monreale, whose revenues were intended for the construction of the Monreale Cathedral. “Disisa” derives from the Arabic word “Aziz”, which means “the splendid”: a definition that unmistakably identifies the beauty of the Conca d’Oro.
The view from the terrace of this Masseria is impressive. 400 hectares, of which 150 are vineyards, are the numbers of this large winery in Western Sicily. It is the first winery registered to plant a Chardonnay vineyard in Sicily. In 1998 the brand “Feudo Disisa” was born and in 2004 the new winery was inaugurated.
Feudo Disisa has been linked to the Di Lorenzo family since 1867.
We are in a hilly, windy territory characterized by strong temperature variations that give the wines freshness and acidity. A very extensive territory that requires a diversified approach for different micro-areas and that has allowed the winery to dedicate great attention to native grape varieties – in particular Catarratto and Perricone – as well as to cultivate international varieties.
Mario Di Lorenzo tells in the video about his winery and future projects, but I would like to dwell on two tastings that were very significant for me. “Lu Bancu”, a pure Catarratto with great character, dynamic, different from the usual, intriguing when thinking about possible (and impossible?) pairings. And then the “GranMassenti”, with a full and persistent sip, enough to understand the attention that Disisa dedicates to this grape variety.
Once again a surprising Sicily. A Sicily without the sea, but with many other surprises waiting around the corner. Certainly a Sicily that requires more time, the time that I hope to have on my next visit?
