Paolo Mastroberardino is a producer deeply in love with his land—in the truest sense of the word. It is no coincidence that, before speaking about his winery, Terredora di Paolo, he begins by listing the many excellences of his Irpinia.
When Paolo suggested sharing his “Pago dei Fusi 2012”, I must confess that my eyes lit up. Terredora di Paolo produces white wines of great character, but the character of his Taurasi wines could only make me even more enthusiastic about this tasting.
The group of guests was remarkably diverse. Lionella Genovese, probably intrigued by a territory far from her Veneto roots. Carlotta Salvini, who for a moment had to set aside her beloved Tuscan reds. Then Massimo Romeo Piparo, producer and artistic director of the Teatro Sistina in Rome—by now such an expert that he deserves an honorary sommelier diploma—and Alessandro Campagna, head coach of the legendary Settebello, just about to begin a “locked-down” training camp in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
Joining us this time was also Gabriele Junior, alias Federico, briefly distracted from his world of entertainment and now clearly heading down the wine path, awaiting his WSET exam and already baptized through several tastings with the friends of vinodabere.it.
Paolo is a wonderful storyteller, and he takes us through his land beautifully. We share this Pago dei Fusi 2012, returning to the glass several times until dinner. It feels like a shame to end such an encounter. But we will continue it in Montefusco, a place one always returns to with great pleasure.
