If it hadn’t been for Stefania, I would have just “walked right past” without realizing I was ignoring a place I’ll hardly forget. I’m talking about La Garrafeira Nacional in Lisbon, a place where, instead of tiles and plaster, the walls are lined only with century-old bottles of Port and Madeira…
The prices are “important”, but luckily this wine shop offers tastings from some of their bottles, and I couldn’t pass that up. One in particular completely won me over. I didn’t know this fortified wine – the Portuguese place it in the category of “vinhos generosos” – and I wasn’t familiar with the grape variety, Galego Dourado.
There are wines that tell a story, and then there are wines that make you feel inside a story. The 80-year-old Carcavelos from Quinta da Bela Vista, produced by Companhia Agricola do Sanguinhal, is one of those wines that can stop time and take you by the hand into another era. It’s not just a wine. It’s a journey.
Even the color – a deep golden amber – gives you a hint that you’re about to drink something serious. And when you bring the glass to your nose… boom. You’re hit by an explosion of intense, mature aromas that speak of spices and toasted dried fruit.
And then the taste. From caramel to dried figs, with a subtle smoky note.
Long, intense, enjoyable, but most of all with a surprising acidity that makes it truly remarkable.
I was struck by how balanced this wine is, despite its age. Yes, eighty years. I don’t know about you, but when I drink a wine that old, I feel a bit in awe. But then it arrives, smiling at you with its old-world charm, and invites you to sit down, relax, and enjoy the moment.
A wine like this deserves respect. It deserves time. It deserves silence. Never have I wanted a piece of chocolate or some cheese more, to complete the experience.
But most of all, I want to return to this wine shop, calmly, and ready to indulge 😉
