Yes, I know, the comparison might seem impossible, as well as the surreal choice.
I’m with friends. My group orders a Gin & Tonic in unison. I would like a glass of wine, and not just any wine, poured from just any bottle that I might not even get to see (NB: a terrible habit of many restaurateurs—when you order wine by the glass they don’t show you the bottle…).
But if I ask for a glass of wine, will I look like the old guy?
If I try to explain that the only scary thing about “Cannonau” is the name, and that it can actually offer wonderful surprises on the palate, will I sound like a nuisance?
It’s a dilemma. A question without an answer. It’s about deciding whether to persist and ask for wine or give in to the group dynamics and go for a Gin & Tonic. But then again, which gin will they put in my glass? No, I’m doomed. The choice becomes even more extreme, and these are the possible options:
A. No thanks, I’m teetotal (not very believable)
B. I’ll have a glass of wine, whatever happens (potential wine-suicide)
C. I desperately insist on knowing what I’ll have in my glass (guaranteed diploma as a pain in the neck)
D. I scan the whole place to understand in advance what the situation is, what I can expect, and choose the best solution (the only viable path)
Anyway, all things considered, understanding wine at 19 can be both a blessing and a curse.
A blessing for what I will have in my glass.
A curse for my social life 🙂
