Souplesse—this is the word Carlotta Salvini used at the end of the tasting to describe Nicola Chiaromonte’s wine. That sense of smoothness that, on an unmistakably rainy day, allowed us to drift across the most varied topics, all while sharing a glass of Nicola Chiaromonte’s Primitivo.
We are in the area of Gioia del Colle—more precisely in Acquaviva delle Fonti—and in our glasses is the Muro Sant’Angelo Contrada Barbatto 2009. With me and Nicola are Carlotta Salvini, Roberto Ciufoli, Maurizio Valeriani, and Antonio Paolini. It promises to be an afternoon where getting a word in won’t be easy 🙂
Are we talking about wine? Not only. Nicola’s stories are many, all clearly expressing his passion for the land, for his work, and for his competitive spirit—but the conversation goes beyond that. From the insightful contributions of Maurizio Valeriani and Antonio Paolini to the discovery of a shared passion linking Nicola, Roberto, and Carlotta, all experienced riders and horse enthusiasts.
The Muro Sant’Angelo Contrada Barbatto flows effortlessly, carrying its eleven years of age with grace. It moves elegantly between fruit, spice, and its 16.5% alcohol—undoubtedly with a strong character, yet with the kind of elegance that made it the perfect companion for a truly enjoyable afternoon.
Antonio Paolini compared it to Cirque du Soleil: doing difficult things and making them look easy.
A beautiful comparison. For the rest… enjoy the video.
