It is in Loreto Aprutino, in Abruzzo, that we stop during our stay in L’Aquila for the Food & Rosé Selection by CMB.
Eighteen hectares spread across several estates, positioned halfway between the Gran Sasso massif and the Adriatic Sea, planted with Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Cococciola, Passerina and Pinot Grigio, in a territory characterized by particularly favorable soil and climate conditions.
A dynamic winery with its gaze always directed forward. This seems to be the approach of Francesco D’Onofrio, the creator of the estate. An approach that can be seen in the architecture of the tasting room, in the winemaking practices, in the use of indigenous yeasts, to which special attention is given, and also in the barrel cellar, where beautifully restored large casks are displayed—originally used by the Aurum liqueur factory in Pescara.
This attention also extends to the names of their wines. One example is “Lu Sciablì” Collezione Privata, a 100% Cococciola aged in amphora for 12 months, as well as “Santinumi”, a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo T.D.V. Riserva DOC, complex and intense, with notes of slight drying and characterized by that “just right” passage in wood capable of giving the wine an elegant spiciness.
A wonderful visit. An interesting tasting. A winery that clearly has no intention of standing still—and above all, the hospitality of Abruzzo at its very best
