The Maremma is a territory where vine cultivation dates back to the Etruscan era. However, it was in the nineteenth century that Scansano became the “summer capital” of Maremma, a period during which viticulture flourished.
We are talking about the Tuscan Maremma, the southernmost area of the region, and about a DOC – that of Morellino di Scansano – established in 1978 and elevated to DOCG status in 2007, with regulations requiring a minimum of 85% Sangiovese and up to 15% of other grapes, usually Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Malvasia, Colorino and Alicante, and only more recently also international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah.
Very interesting and enjoyable was the evening organized by the Consorzio and curated by Antonio Stelli and Roberta Perna.
An event designed to introduce Morellino to an ever wider audience, myself included 😊. An evening during which we had the opportunity to appreciate the excellent quality level of the wines presented.
If I had to use one adjective to describe Morellino, I would dare to say “easy-drinking” and at the same time extremely enjoyable. A description that is certainly not very technical but that I hope conveys the pleasure of this tasting.
On tasting were the 10 Morellino di Scansano DOC wines selected by a panel of 6 judges – Antonio Boco, Andrea Gori, Riccardo Margheri, Richard Baudains and Stefania Vinciguerra – chosen as the 10 “Morellino del Cuore”, labels capable of best reflecting the territory and spirit of the DOCG, evaluated according to their category.
