Tokara: a contemporary vision and great wines in the mountains of Stellenbosch

Tokara Wine Estate is one of the most fascinating and dynamic estates in the South African wine landscape. More recent than many of the region’s historic properties, Tokara was founded in 1994 from a personal and entrepreneurial vision: that of GT Ferreira, who initially purchased the estate as a “lifestyle farm,” drawn by the extraordinary beauty of its setting.

It was only a few years later, in 1999, that the project took a decisive turn. Surrounded by some of South Africa’s finest wineries, Ferreira recognized the viticultural potential of the area and chose to invest seriously in wine production. This marked the birth of Tokara as we know it today: a modern, ambitious winery that quickly established itself among the country’s leading producers.

The name itself tells a family story: Tokara is a combination of the names of the founder’s children, Thomas and Cara, highlighting the deeply family-driven nature of the project. Even today, the Ferreira family remains actively involved in the estate, ensuring continuity and authenticity in its vision.

Production is defined by both diversity and quality, with two key pillars. On one side, Cabernet Sauvignon, the signature grape of Stellenbosch, which here expresses structure and elegance. On the other, Sauvignon Blanc, crafted with freshness and precision, perfectly reflecting the character of the terroir.

Despite its relatively young age—just over twenty-five years—Tokara has already built an impressive track record. Awards and recognitions extend beyond wine to include its olive oil production, another distinctive element of the estate. These accolades reflect a strong commitment to quality, attention to detail, and an increasingly international outlook.

As with many wineries in Stellenbosch, tourism plays a crucial role. The region is one of South Africa’s leading wine tourism destinations, attracting visitors from all over the world. Here, tourism is not just an addition—it is a core component of the local economy, supporting wineries, restaurants, and the broader community while fostering cultural exchange.

With its privileged position between mountains and vineyards, Tokara perfectly embodies this model. It is a place where wine is inseparable from the landscape, and where the experience becomes part of the product itself.

While its connection with Italy is still largely to be explored, curiosity is certainly there. Italy is seen as a dream destination—almost an ideal reference—where wine and food naturally come together. An imagery built on conviviality, simplicity, and quality, which finds resonance here as well, among the hills of Stellenbosch.

Tokara ultimately tells the story of a contemporary vision: a young yet already mature winery, looking to the future without losing sight of its family roots. An open invitation to discover South African wine through one of its most compelling ambassadors.
